JAN HAVICKSZ STEEN OIL ON CANVAS laid down on canvas, attributed to this artist. (Dutch c. 1626-1679) titled "Adoration". A Nativity scene. 32.50" by 58". Unsigned. In a 19th century European gilt wood and gold leaf frame. Provenance: purchased at the Hoyt Hotel Barbary Coast 1969 auction, whose owner, Harvey Dick, had "pickers" finding antique items for the hotel (which was located at 614 N.W. Hoyt, Portland, OR) from around the world. Steen's most important subjects were from daily life and his works are known for their rich colors. It is noted that among his more than 700 works are historical paintings, biblical works, portraits and landscapes. Reportedly some 350 of his works and those attributed to him have survived.
