TWO MID-19TH CENTURY OILS ON CANVAS, portraits of Richard and Nancy Bates from Cincinnati, Ohio, circa late 1840s/early 1850s. Unsigned. Oval openings measure 27" x 22". In matching gilt wood frames; 37.25" x 32.25" overall. After Richard Bates (1808-1855) died, Nancy Trotter Bates (1814-1870) moved to Dayton, Ohio and became the head of the Dayton Female Association. The Dayton Female Association ran an orphanage for girls and later a sanctuary for Civil War widows. Lot includes a copy of a letter dated 1956 describing the paintings as the author's great-grandparents.
